Tips And Tricks To Ease Dental Fear

Dental phobia prevents many patients from getting much-needed dental treatment. If you are one of the patients suffering from severe anxiety, you are not alone. Here are a few ways to overcome it.

Discuss your dental fears

If fear of dental procedures is stopping you from visiting a dentist regularly, then discuss your concerns with the practitioner. Most dentists strive to create a comfortable environment where patients can openly express their fears and concerns. Communicate your fears and explain why you are nervous about the procedures. Some common concerns include pain, anxiety, anesthesia side effects such as nausea and vomiting, etc. Your dentist may prescribe you some measures to help ease anxiety and fear. Dentists understand patients’ fears and are not judgmental of them. They can recommend different solutions to help patients with dental anxiety feel more comfortable during their treatment.

Agree on a signal

It’s normal to feel afraid or anxious before dental treatments. If your dentist has diagnosed you with dental fear or anxiety, you and your dentist may agree upon a signal that is easy for you to give so that your dentist is aware and can use additional techniques to help you relax during your procedure.

Take someone with you for support

Ask a friend or a family member to accompany you during your visit to the dentist. If they know what procedure you’ll be undergoing, they can help create a distraction for you and keep you calm the entire time. They can also communicate with your dentist on your behalf if you are unable to speak due to anxiety.

Bring distractions to occupy your mind

In order to ease your dental fear, consider bringing some distractions to keep you occupied during the procedure. You may choose to bring a book, magazine, or crossword puzzle. You can also bring music to help you relax. A smartphone can also be used to watch a movie or TV show during your treatment. Having something to do will distract you from any discomfort you may feel. It will also keep you from thinking about the procedure that is going to take place. This could help minimize any anxiety associated with the treatment.

Consider sedation dentistry

Some patients have severe anxiety or fear of dental procedures. If your dentist recommends a procedure that will lead to discomfort, pain, or stress, consider getting a sedative. Sedatives help patients relax throughout their appointment and can reduce the need for anesthesia. Two main types of sedatives are nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Nitrous oxide is often referred to as laughing gas because it is inhaled through a mask. Oral conscious sedation is taken by mouth in the form of a pill. Talk to your dentist about which option is right for you.
